Punta Cana airport transfer with a baby: car seats and strollers

Car seats are free, but they have to be requested

Every car seat we carry is included in the fixed price. There is no rental fee, no per-day charge and no deposit. What we do need is notice: seats live at the depot, not in the boot of every car, so the driver collects and installs the right one before heading to the airport. A seat requested at the last minute on WhatsApp usually still works, but a seat requested when you book always works.

Send the child's age and approximate weight rather than just "a baby". A nine-month-old and a three-year-old need different equipment, and "car seat" means something different to every family. If you have two children, say two, and say the ages of both.

Seats are cleaned between uses and installed by the driver, who does it several times a day. You are welcome to check the fit and tighten it yourself before you sit down — most parents do, and no driver is offended by it.

Which seat for which age

Newborn to roughly 12 months, up to about 10 kg: a rear-facing infant carrier, belted into the rear seat. This is the seat that fits the tiniest passengers properly, and it is the one that most often needs to be requested in advance because it is age-specific.

Roughly one to four years, 9 to 18 kg: a forward-facing convertible seat with a five-point harness. This is the workhorse seat and the one we carry most of.

Roughly four to eight years, 15 to 36 kg: a booster that positions the adult belt across the child's shoulder and hips. Older children who have outgrown a booster simply use the vehicle belt.

If you prefer your own seat — many families travelling long-haul do, because the child already sleeps in it — bring it. It rides free as part of your luggage, and the driver will help fit it. Just tell us, so we do not bring a duplicate that takes up a seat.

Where the stroller goes

In the boot, and it does not count against your luggage allowance. A folding umbrella stroller disappears into any vehicle. A full-size travel system with a detachable carrycot fits a standard car, but it eats most of the boot, so if you also have three or four large suitcases the maths stops working.

That is the single most common family miscount: two adults, one baby, three 23 kg cases, a travel system and a car seat is not a sedan. Tell the desk what you actually have and we send a minivan on Standard or an executive van on VIP. The vehicle changes; the way the price is quoted does not — you are told the figure in writing before you fly.

Many airlines return the stroller at the aircraft door in Punta Cana rather than on the belt, so you can usually push the baby through immigration and baggage. Fold it at the curb; the driver loads it.

The airport part of the day with a baby

PUJ is an open-air, palm-roofed airport, which is good news with an infant: no long sealed corridors, plenty of air. From aircraft door to curb, plan 30 to 50 minutes in a normal arrival window — immigration, baggage, customs. The landing-to-driver timings guide breaks that down hour by hour, and it does not change because you have a baby, except that everything takes a little longer with a pushchair.

There are toilets with changing facilities in the arrivals area, and small shops selling water and snacks after customs. Do not count on finding formula, specific baby food or a particular brand of nappies at the airport — buy those on the first supermarket run instead.

Your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign and takes the trolley from you as soon as you are through. Waiting time is included and tracked against your flight number, so a slow exit with a toddler costs you nothing. The finding your driver guide shows exactly where he stands.

A supermarket stop on the way to the hotel

Nappies, formula, wipes, water and snacks are far cheaper at a supermarket than in a resort shop, and the drive from the airport passes several. A stop of 20 to 30 minutes on the way to Bávaro or Punta Cana Village is the single most useful thing a family with a baby can do on arrival day, and it saves a taxi run the next morning.

Boiled or bottled water is what most visitors use for making up formula. Bottled water is in the vehicle, and every supermarket sells large bottles cheaply.

The drive itself: 15 minutes or 75

How long your baby has to sit in a seat depends entirely on the zone. Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village are 10 to 15 minutes. Bávaro and Los Corales are 20 to 30. Uvero Alto is 45 to 60. Miches is around 90, and Bayahíbe 60 to 75.

For anything over about 45 minutes with an infant, a short stop is normal — the driver will pull over somewhere sensible for a feed or a nappy change if you ask. It is a private car; nobody else is waiting.

Air conditioning is on in every vehicle and the driver will adjust it. Say if the vents are blowing straight at the baby; it is a two-second fix that people are strangely reluctant to ask for.

Prices with children

Children count as passengers for vehicle sizing, but there is no child fare and no infant surcharge. The price is per vehicle, one way: Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village $29 Standard / $69 VIP, Bávaro $35 / $79, Uvero Alto $59 / $109, Bayahíbe $110 / $179. Taxes and tolls are in the figure.

Seven to fourteen passengers move to a van, which adds $20 to the Standard rate and $40 to VIP. A family of five with a baby and a lot of luggage is usually still a minivan at the normal Standard price, not a van.

Car seats, bottled water, flight tracking, meet-and-greet and waiting time are all included. The prices page has the full table. There is no night surcharge, so a 02:00 arrival with a sleeping toddler is the same figure as a midday one.

Why not a taxi or a shared shuttle with an infant

Airport taxis at PUJ do not carry car seats. You would be holding the baby, in a car you did not choose, at a price negotiated at the curb. That is the whole argument, and it is why almost every family books ahead.

Shared shuttles do carry seats occasionally, but they leave when full and drop at four or five hotels in order. With a baby who has just done a seven-hour flight, an extra 45 minutes of loading plus three other resort stops is a hard hour. The return leg with a child

Book the return at the same time. Lobby pickup is three hours before departure from Bávaro and 3.5 to 4 hours from Uvero Alto, Miches or Bayahíbe — the departure buffers guide lists every zone. With a small child, take the earlier end of the window: check-in queues at PUJ are slow and a stressed toddler in a queue is worse than an extra 20 minutes in the departure hall.

Ask for the car seat again on the return; it is not automatic just because you had one on arrival, though the desk usually carries the request over when both legs are booked together.

Strollers can be gate-checked on the way out too. Keep the folding one for the terminal and put the big case in the boot.

Do you provide car seats for babies in Punta Cana?

Yes, free of charge — infant carriers, forward-facing convertible seats and boosters. They must be requested when you book so the driver can collect and fit the right seat before going to the airport. Tell us the child's age and weight.

Does a car seat cost extra?

Can the driver stop for a supermarket or a feed on the way?

Yes. A 20 to 30 minute supermarket stop for nappies, formula and water is common and can be arranged when booking or in the car, and on longer runs the driver will pull over for a feed or nappy change whenever you ask.
