When to book your Punta Cana airport transfer

Answer first · updated September 2026 · written by the dispatch desk

Book two to four weeks ahead for a normal date, four to eight weeks for the December to April high season, and six to twelve weeks for Christmas, New Year, Easter week and any group larger than six. The price is identical whenever you book — $29 to Cap Cana, $35 to Bávaro, $60 to Uvero Alto per vehicle for one to six passengers, taxes and tolls included — so early booking buys availability, not a discount. Same-day and next-morning requests are still accepted whenever a vehicle is free; message WhatsApp +1 849 377 5889 and dispatch answers with a yes or a no, not a surge price.

Prices do not change with the season or the date you book

This is the first thing to settle, because most travellers assume airport transport behaves like flights and hotels. It does not here. Our one-way fixed rates per vehicle, one to six passengers, taxes and tolls included, are the same on 3 February and 3 September: Cap Cana $29, Punta Cana Village $29, Cabeza de Toro $32, Bávaro $35, Arena Gorda $42, Macao $49, Uvero Alto $60. VIP, a luxury SUV or executive van, runs $69 to $119 across those zones. Seven to fourteen passengers move to a van, adding $20 on Standard and $40 on VIP.

There is no night surcharge, no holiday surcharge and no peak-week uplift. A 2 a.m. landing on 31 December costs what a 2 p.m. landing in June costs. The prices page lists every zone if you want to check your resort before writing to us.

So booking early is never about locking a cheaper rate. It is about making sure a vehicle of the right size exists for your arrival window on a day when several thousand other people are also landing.

What high season actually looks like at PUJ

December to April is the peak. The airport runs its heaviest schedule, the North American and European banks of flights stack up in the same afternoon hours, and the resorts along the Bávaro strip and Uvero Alto sit close to full. Immigration and baggage that take 20 to 30 minutes in September can take 40 to 60 minutes when four widebodies land together.

Inside that peak there are sharper spikes: the week between Christmas and New Year, Semana Santa (Easter week, when Dominican domestic travel adds to the arrivals), and the North American spring-break weeks in March. Those are the dates where van availability, not car availability, becomes the constraint.

May to November is quieter, with the hurricane-season months of August to October the softest. Arrivals move faster, roads are emptier, and a request made two days out is usually fine. Weather is a separate question and the weather and hurricane guide covers what actually changes on the road.

Lead times that work, by traveller type

Couple or family of two to four, low season: two weeks ahead is comfortable, and 48 hours is normally still fine. Same season, high season: three to four weeks.

Family or party of five to six needing a larger car, or anyone with car seats: four weeks in high season, two in low. Car seats are free but they are physical objects that have to be on the right vehicle, so they are worth naming early.

Seven to fourteen passengers in one van: six to eight weeks in high season. Groups above fourteen, weddings and multi-vehicle blocks: two to three months, as set out in the wedding and group transfers guide. Golf bags, dive gear, surfboards and similar cargo also shift you into a bigger vehicle — see the sports equipment guide.

The dates worth booking earliest

23 December to 3 January is the single tightest block of the year. Arrivals cluster, departures cluster harder, and the 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. departure bank on 2 and 3 January is the busiest hotel-lobby hour of the calendar. Book both directions together for those dates.

Easter week moves each year and behaves the same way. So do the mid-February and mid-March weeks, Dominican Independence Day on 27 February, and the run-up to Carnival at the end of February.

For festival and event weekends in Punta Cana or Cap Cana, vans are gone before cars are. If your plan depends on one vehicle taking the whole group together, that is the booking to place first.

Booking last minute: what is realistic

Same-day and next-morning bookings are accepted year-round when a vehicle is free, and in low season they nearly always are. What you lose at the last minute is choice: a specific VIP vehicle, a van for a group of ten, or two car seats on one car may not be available on three hours' notice in February.

If you are already at the airport, message the desk anyway. Dispatch will tell you honestly how long a vehicle needs to reach PUJ rather than let you wait for something that is not coming. That is also the moment where the airport taxi scams guide is worth having read, because the curb is where pressure selling happens.

You never pay more for a late booking. The answer is simply yes or no on availability, at the same fixed rate.

Changing or cancelling a booking

Flight numbers, times, hotels and passenger counts can be edited by WhatsApp up to the day before travel at no cost, and a delayed or rescheduled flight is handled by us, not by you — we track the flight and move the driver. The delayed and cancelled flights guide explains that in full.

Because changes are free and prices are fixed, there is no downside to booking early with an approximate return time and confirming it later. Most travellers who wait do so out of habit from airline pricing, and it only costs them availability.

Payment follows the normal route explained in the payment and tipping guide: nothing unusual happens because you booked in December.

Return transfers: the part people book too late

Departures are tighter than arrivals in high season, because half a resort leaves in the same morning window. Working backwards from your flight, plan three hours before departure for a normal PUJ flight and more between December and April; the departure buffers guide has the calculation by zone.

Book the return at the same time as the arrival. It is one message, the price is the same fixed zone rate, and it removes the single most common problem we see in January: a family trying to arrange a 5 a.m. lobby pickup at 10 p.m. the night before. The hotel return page covers how the lobby pickup runs.

Round-trip pages for each zone show both legs together if you prefer to see the whole thing priced in one place.

How to book, whatever the season

Send the arrival date, flight number, resort, number of passengers, suitcases and any car seats to WhatsApp +1 849 377 5889, or use the quote form on any zone page. You get a written confirmation with the fixed price, the vehicle and the meeting point.

If you are still choosing dates, ask. We will tell you plainly whether the week you are looking at is tight for a van or wide open, because a booking that cannot be honoured is worth nothing to either of us.

Questions we get on this

How far in advance should I book a Punta Cana airport transfer?
Two to four weeks for an ordinary date, four to eight weeks between December and April, and six to twelve weeks for Christmas, New Year, Easter week or any group needing a van. Booking earlier does not lower the price, it only secures the right vehicle.
Are transfer prices higher in high season or at Christmas?
No. Fixed per-vehicle rates apply all year: $29 to Cap Cana, $35 to Bávaro, $60 to Uvero Alto for one to six passengers, taxes and tolls included. There is no holiday, weekend or night surcharge.
Can I book a transfer on the same day or after I land?
Yes, whenever a vehicle is free, and in the quieter months it usually is. Message WhatsApp +1 849 377 5889 and the desk will tell you how long a car needs to reach PUJ. Last-minute bookings cost the same fixed rate.
When is high season in Punta Cana?
December to April, with the sharpest peaks between Christmas and New Year, Easter week and the March spring-break weeks. August to October is the quietest stretch and the easiest for short-notice bookings.
Can I change my transfer after booking?
Yes, free of charge by WhatsApp up to the day before travel — times, flight numbers, hotel or passenger count. Flight delays are handled by us automatically because arrivals are tracked.
Should I book the return transfer at the same time?
Yes, especially between December and April, when whole resorts depart in the same early-morning window. It is one message, the same fixed zone price, and it avoids arranging a 5 a.m. pickup the night before.
