Wheels down to curb: 25 to 45 minutes
PUJ is an open-air terminal and it is faster to walk than most airports its size, but immigration is the bottleneck and it is entirely a function of how many aircraft landed in the same twenty minutes. A quiet morning arrival can be at the curb in 25 minutes. A 4pm bank of flights from the US Northeast and Canada can take 45, occasionally more in high season.
Baggage runs in parallel and is rarely the constraint. Customs is a walk-through unless you are flagged. So when you are planning dinner reservations or a check-in cutoff, use landing time plus 35 minutes plus the drive time for your zone, and you will be right more often than not.
The short zones: Cap Cana, the Village, Cabeza de Toro
Cap Cana and the Punta Cana Village are both 10 to 15 minutes, and the variable is the gate, not the road. Cap Cana is a controlled community: the car stops at the guard post, the driver gives the property and guest name, and the barrier lifts. That is a two-minute routine when the reservation name matches and a fifteen-minute one when it does not, which is why we ask for the name on the booking.
Cabeza de Toro is 15 to 20 minutes on the same road before the Bávaro turn. Nothing about these runs is hard; the whole trip is usually shorter than the immigration queue you just cleared.
The strip: Bávaro and Arena Gorda
Bávaro is 20 to 30 minutes. The spread comes from where on the strip you are — El Cortecito and Los Corales sit at the near end, the big Palace and Riu complexes further along — and from resort gate traffic at the 3pm check-in peak, when a line of arrival vehicles can back up in a driveway.
Arena Gorda adds five to ten minutes past the Bávaro border. It is priced as its own zone at $42 because it genuinely is further, which is the single most common surprise for guests who booked a Majestic or Bahia Principe property believing it was Bávaro.
The long runs: Macao, Uvero Alto and beyond
Macao is 30 to 40 minutes. Uvero Alto is 45 to 60, and the second half is the part that matters: past Macao the road narrows, lighting disappears for long stretches, and the resort entrance roads are unlit private drives that can run a kilometre or more from the highway to the lobby. On a wet night this is slower, and no honest operator quotes 45 minutes for a 1am arrival in the rain.
Bayahibe is 60 to 75 minutes and La Romana 60 to 80, both west on the highway. Santo Domingo, city or SDQ airport, is 2.5 to 3 hours and should be planned as a half-day.
Departure buffers we use, by zone
For the ride back to PUJ we schedule pickup on a buffer measured from your scheduled departure, not from the drive time. It is operator advice, not an airline rule, and it is built from watching the check-in queues: 2.5 hours before wheels-up from Cap Cana and the Village, 3 hours from Bávaro and Arena Gorda, 3.5 hours from Uvero Alto.
The extra half hour on Uvero Alto is the road, not caution. The extra time on all of them is PUJ departures, which is a busy, warm terminal where a US-bound morning bank can put 200 people in front of you at a single airline counter.
If your flight is the first out at 7am, we will tell you plainly that a 3:30am pickup from Uvero Alto is what the buffer implies, and we will still do it. If you are on an afternoon departure, the buffer is comfortable rather than brutal.
What we do not control
Two things move these numbers and neither is the driver: the Bávaro strip at check-in hour, and a police checkpoint on the Verón stretch, which appears at random and adds a few minutes. Neither changes your price. The rate is agreed in writing before you fly and it does not move because the road did.
