The short answer — PUJ for resort stays

Most people reading this page are deciding between flights, not airports. The resort decision is simple: Punta Cana International Airport was built for the resort zone and sits inside it. From the PUJ curb it is 10 to 15 minutes to Cap Cana, 20 to 30 to Bávaro, 45 to 60 to Uvero Alto. Your holiday starts within the hour you land.

SDQ and LRM are not wrong answers — they are answers to different questions. SDQ serves the capital and the country's biggest route network; LRM serves La Romana, Casa de Campo and the Bayahíbe coast. Both are covered later with the cases where each genuinely wins.

The three airports at a glance

Punta Cana International (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the country and sits at the eastern tip, inside the resort corridor. Drive times from the curb: Cap Cana and Punta Cana Village 10–15 minutes, Cabeza de Toro 15–20, Bávaro 20–30, Arena Gorda 25–35, Macao 30–40, Uvero Alto 45–60, Miches around 1.5 hours.

Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) is the capital's airport, on the coast east of the city. To the resort zones it is a motorway run of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours to Bávaro, a little less to Cap Cana, more to Uvero Alto. To Santo Domingo city itself it is the correct airport — 30 to 40 minutes to the centre.

La Romana (LRM) is the small airport between the two, mainly used by charters and some seasonal scheduled flights. It is 10 to 20 minutes from Casa de Campo and La Romana town, about 40 to 60 minutes from Bayahíbe and Dominicus, and roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from Bávaro.

When PUJ wins — which is almost always

Any stay inside the resort zones: Bávaro, Cap Cana, Arena Gorda, Macao, Uvero Alto, Cabeza de Toro, the Punta Cana Village. The airport is inside the zone, the route network from North America and Europe is the deepest in the Caribbean, and the transfer is the short fixed-price ride on our price list.

Miches is the surprise entry. Guests assume the closest airport to Playa Esmeralda is somewhere north; in practice PUJ is the gateway, with a drive of about 1.5 hours that we run as a fixed-price zone.

When Santo Domingo (SDQ) makes sense

The honest cases: you are spending real time in Santo Domingo — the colonial zone, family, business — before or after the beach; your route into SDQ is dramatically better on schedule or price, which happens from some Latin American and European cities; or flights into PUJ are sold out on your dates, which occurs in peak weeks.

Now the false-economy math, because the desk runs it weekly. A family of four saves, say, $80 a head flying into SDQ — $320 against the PUJ fare. The SDQ-to-Bávaro transfer is a fixed $250 per vehicle each way, so $500 round trip against $67 round trip to Bávaro from PUJ. The airfare saving is gone before the holiday starts, and four people have spent six extra hours on the motorway. When La Romana (LRM) makes sense

Casa de Campo is the clean case: the resort sits minutes from LRM, and flying into PUJ for Casa de Campo means a 60-to-80-minute drive west that LRM guests skip entirely. The same logic covers La Romana town and, in part, Bayahíbe and Dominicus — though check the drive either way, because PUJ to Bayahíbe is 60 to 75 minutes and sometimes the PUJ flight is the better schedule.

Charters are the other case. Some European tour operators fly their packages into LRM for the Bayahíbe coast, and if your package lands there, that is the airport you use.

How long is the drive from SDQ to Bávaro?
